Rutherford H. Platt’s newest article on the greening of New York’s waterfront from the July/August, 2009 issue of Environment (Heldref Publications, Inc.) looks at how New York City’s waterfront, once the industrial center of the city, has evolved over the last 100 years.

The building of elevated highways that cut off the city from this great natural resource and decades of decay after shipping packed up for New Jersey helped to give many New Yorkers a negative view of the waterfront and limited the development of large areas of the city.

You can read the entire article here and learn about the battles to transform the waterfront from blight to a beautiful new resource for the city’s citizens.
