Fossil Fuel Energy Use for Meat in New York City
ISC is proud to present, with the Hunter College Department of Geography, Michael Minn’s new paper, “Fossil Fuel Energy Use for Meat in New York City”. This paper details the estimated amount of fossil fuel energy used in the production, processing, distribution, and preparation of meat, poultry and seafood consumed in New York City. Estimates are based on publicly available data and existing food production energy models. At only around 2.2% of the city’s share of total fossil fuel use, energy use for meat does not constitute as serious an issue as other environmental and resource considerations associated with current and projected levels of livestock production.
