Dr. Peter Marcotullio Awarded ASRC Seed Grant for Study of Heat Vulnerability in NYC

Dr. Peter Marcotullio, Director of the Institute for Sustainable Cities at Hunter College, and Professor of Geography, was awarded a seed grant from the CUNY Advanced Science and Research Center for a study of the role of urban forests in mitigating heat vulnerability in New York City.

The project, titled “Estimating the potential role of trees in reducing heat vulnerability in New York City metropolitan area”, is a collaboration with Dr. Andrew Reinmann who holds a joint appointment with CUNY ASRC and the Hunter College Department of Geography.

The project will involve the estimation of energy demand for cooling for New York City using statistical analysis of publicly available data; and the estimation of reduction of that energy use afforded through the use of street trees using direct measurement of temperature and humidity at select locations in the city and Westchester County.

The project will extend through the 2018-2019 academic year.
